Whereas everyone else comes by once, maybe twice and plays with his belly and feeds him food and tells him he's a good boy, the other guy comes WAY too often, giving him shots and bottles of beer and hand-feeding him so much food and getting to see first hand how big and stuffed and swollen his gut gets throughout the night, and is the one to give him belly rubs when he drunkenly whines at the pain 😳

SWEATING thinking about Steve swinging past Bucky again, affectionately thumping him on the swollen belly and asking, "how's it going, champ? You full, yet?" causing Bucky to curl desperately around his bulging gut with a wordless, strung-out whine. His needy noise is so loud that Steve can't hear the solid, deep sound of his palm smacking him so... he has to do it again. Just a few more times to be sure, listening instead of the drum of his belly, to how his whine changes pitch, higher and hotter, as he's thumped like Steve's at the store testing the ripeness of the melons. He can't squirm to get away, though, he's long past that, so he just has to sit there, shivering and complaining with his incoherent sounds.

Bucky's just so sensitive! He has to whine that loud! It hurts! His whole belly throbs, feeling like it's on fire, so stretched that his skin is taut, pink, and shiny. He can't fit anything more inside him. Fuck, he can't think about anything more than his stomach. He's so stuffed and so fucking drunk that he doesn't even remember Steve. He peers at him through his eyelashes without recollection. Sloppy drunk. He can't place his face, but he's real handsome.

He doesn't remember anything that Steve's done to him. Again and again.

He doesn't know what Steve's come by time after time whereas everyone else has just had one go around. Steve's shoved so many snacks into his lazy-open lips. More than anyone else has by far. He doesn't know that it's been Steve constantly taking empty red solo cups from his weak fingers and replacing them with cups so full that they're almost spilling, sticky and wet down his wrist onto the poor sofa he's suffocating with his weight. He doesn't know and he doesn't care. Bucky just thinks that Steve is checking up on him, being a little rough. It's too bad Bucky's lips are too loose from drinking to say anything. He just whines more. Steve's smacks and gropes are nothing he can't handle... for now.

Steve gives himself an invitation, "that so?" he asks after another glutted whine from Bucky, tracing the thick curve of his ball belly. Bucky groans this time, panting. "Mm-hm, yeah, you're good, just look at you," he murmurs.

Bucky thinks this guy is talking more to himself than to Bucky. Somehow he doesn't mind. His belly pulses and hurts but it's better when Steve's touching him, when -

"Ohhhh," Bucky whimpers, dirty, when suddenly Steve finds his weak spot, his fingers hot and warm and thick as they trace the rim of his belly button, not dipping in. Not yet. Bucky can't believe how sensitive he feels right there. He can't breathe. It's the weight of all the food and drink inside him, it's the anticipation, it's the pain, it's - "guhhh!" He moans as Steve pushes the tip of his pointer finger into his tightly stretched, shallow belly button.

He's touching him like he's fingering him.

Oh.

It feels obscene and good and Bucky is pretty sure blindingly suddenly that if he doesn't come right the fuck now from having his taut, heavy belly fondled and his belly button fingered while he reclines, totally slouched into the couch, limp, he'll just explode instead. There's so much pressure. He's so tight. And Steve's touching him like that, fingering his belly button with one hand and using the other to scratch his strained skin so lightly, tickling, pushing his skin-tight shirt up to the sweaty fold under his pecs and sweatier armpits and Bucky is gonna come. He's, he's so big.

How did he get so big? Has everyone been feeding him? Has everyone been taking turns to stuff him like he's a centerpiece, gluttonous and entertaining? Is everyone watching Steve touch him? Does everyone know he's this much of a glutton that he's gonna bust a nut from nearly bursting!?

Obvs *handwavey* reasons exist for a reason, but I always do wonder about Hob capture fics cuz if he's gotten broken down to that point why not ask for Death's hand to get out? Does he think he can only do that when his Stranger asks at each century meeting?? Like whyyyy would he persist through ALL that torture only to finally ask for release when he's saved? 😭😭😭 Did he only hold out through spite and now free of their gaze or arrogant proprietary claim on his corpse, he'll allow himself that out?

Guhhh many thoughts, many questions, but mostly that was a gutting good drabble!

I've been noodling on this all morning! And I finally got time to rewatch the scenes in The Sound of Her Wings and Dream! never! tells! Hob! how! it! all! works! In the comics too, Dream just says "Death will not touch you unless you truly desire it." So it is actually pretty safe to say that Hob just...doesn't know he can just wish for death and it'll come to him. In my head, a man that's willingly lived for 600+ just doesn't even think of death as an option any longer, especially with less directions than an IKEA pamphlet to go by.

To add to that, I also like to think with the whole spell bound nonsense, Death might not even be able to reach Hob from within the binding circle. We don't know the full parameters of the magic, just that Dream couldn't get out, and if something that powerful kept Dream in, it would definitely keep Hob in, and maybe other power entities out.

...Or maybe he really just wanted to see Dream one last time before he departed for the Sunless Lands 👀

1) How old were you when you first starting writing fanfiction?

um 13 I think? or 12? I was trying to understand where harry/ginny came from in hbp so I wrote some missing scenes. they might still be floating out there but I sincerely wish I could remember my passwords from almost a decade ago so I could delete them, lmao.

3) Do you prefer writing OC’s or reader inserts? Explain your answer.

I... didn’t know reader inserts were a real thing tbh until a couple years ago. I find the idea a bit strange, in all honesty, and while I don’t have a lot of ocs nowadays I also definitely prefer that to reader inserts which makes for weird reading, I’ve found.

5) If you had to choose a favourite out of all of your multi chaptered stories, which would it be and why?

renascence (nsfw), mostly because lauryssa is my heart and soul and also I really liked the fact that I managed to make this semi plotty, which is a mission and a half for me usually. also I just love any premise that involves both smashing canon with a sledgehammer and making it so much gayerbetter.

7) When is your preferred time to write?

I like writing at around 9.30pm to about 11pm. that’s my prime time in terms of concentration and usually I don’t feel rushed like I would while on public transport or whatever.

god I hate saying this because I absolutely adore my boy johnny, but writing hullen johnny in fix you was a nightmare and honestly I still don’t think I did it right. I think it didn’t help that hullen johnny was written purposely unevenly because he kept switching between hullen and human and so trying to replicate that in some way was really bloody hard. also. hullen johnny was a five star dickhead tbh.

15) If you write OC’s, how do you decide on their names?

I honestly can’t remember the last oc I wrote in fanfic. but uh in my original project that I have going - I may or may not have named a character yalena. :)

18) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?

I don’t want to say the chase, a lauryssa fic set on earth-7 with (dinah) laurel being the green arrow and nyssa as black canary, because ideally I’d like to finish it one day. but rn I think it’s on hiatus because I’m out of ideas for the time being. I think I need to sit down and plan it rather than do it off the cuff like everything else I write lmao.

36) Can you give us a spoiler for one of your WIP’s?

so I started writing a lauryssa thing after working with @laurelances on a gifset and it’s basically just inspired by the set, but sorta with the roles reversed? anyway there’s this hilarious (in my mind anyway) lawyer joke and honestly I think I’m so funny:

“I think you know which thing I meant,” Laurel interrupts, wishing her heart would stop thudding so fiercely against her ribcage. “I… told you I loved you.”

Nyssa nods and bites her lip the way she always does when she's nervous.

“Yeah. Why did you say that?”

That throws Laurel off somewhat, even though she knows Nyssa wouldn't say anything hurtful on purpose. “Whoa, objection,” she says hotly before she can stop herself, and then miraculously they both laugh and some of the tension eases.

“Objection sustained, counsellor,” Nyssa replies with a smile.

39) Do you prefer first, second or third person?

third. good lord. I haven’t written in first or second person since my hp days so it would turn out awful if I tried because I’m so rusty.

43) Has anyone ever guessed the plot twist of one of your fics before you posted it?

I don’t really do plot twists in all honesty. so I’m not sure. I don’t think so.

45) What spurs you on during the writing process?

getting some kind of validation. whether that’s through likes, reblogs, tags of reblogs, replies, comments, kudos, bookmarks, asks, messages - all of that tells me that I’m not just screaming into a void, that someone can actually hear me and cares about the story I want to tell. and I think it’s me anticipating that that really motivates me when writing.

49) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?

I will never forget the first fic I read and I’m just sad I haven’t been able to find it since. I was twelve years old and was given the science homework of finding out what happens when you put too much sugar in your tea. I decided to search through askjeeves (my generation will know what that is) and I got a lot of hits. around that time, jkr had just released that marauder prequel (back when we thought she was still benign with all her godforsaken additions to hp canon), so when I saw the names remus and sirius, I got excited, thinking it was that. I clicked on it and read my first ever fic, featuring sirius fussing over remus after a transformation and making him tea with too much sugar. and then them making out a bit. 

50) If you could write only angst, fluff or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?

angst, because that’s mostly what I write now anyway lol. I don’t think I know the meaning of writing a happy fic.

Alright, so the question asked by this post is - are TES games fun? Do they hold up? Are they good? And well, a game being good is mostly subjective, same for fun, as it depends on your tastes, but "does this game hold up to this day" is a different thing. For the four last main games (I'll be ignoring Arena, I know a single maniac who finds it fun) let's explore what they brought, what they lost, and what they have that's unique compared to the series.

Daggerfall

Brought: In depth character creator

Brought: Lore that'll remain for the rest of the series

Unique: gigantic map and dungeons

Daggerfall is a very interesting game that I can't call good because it's, let's be honest, a chore to play. While unmatched to this day in RPGs, it's map is endlessly generated nothing, and the dungeons are repetitive and labyrinthic.

Gameplay wise, it really shines in some aspects. The character creator gives you so many options no other game has, and some small details add wonders to the immersion, like the fast travel system giving you real time travel days. While unpopular I am also a huge fan of the swing mouse to swing sword mechanic. The controls are rough but the way they're set up favors a slow gameplay and coupled with adjustable reflexes, makes it easier to play for me than action games. Unfortunately, it's bug ridden, and the graphics have not aged well.

Is Daggerfall good? Eh. It has some gems if you can dig through the sludge, but it's aged poorly and that makes it inaccessible to modern gamers.

Morrowind

Lost: map size

Brought: map detail

Lost: customization options

Brought: full 3d, and quality of life improvements all around

Brought: new lore for the region

Unique: world design and uhm...writing quirks

Morrowind is so radically different from the change in leadership that occured after Daggerfall. While it's map is tiny in comparison, it's filled with things to do. It's a completely different philosophy. Player characters lost many customization options but it's clearer where to get things in the world.

Graphics - while polygonal to hell and back, Morrowind benefits from killer art direction that makes the game look surprisingly decent for it's age. Might make zoomers cringe but I doubt anyone who grew up playing games where you can see the texels will cringe at the visuals. The world design is so iconic it carries itself.

Gameplay wise Morrowind is aged. It's a game that can barely be played without a manual, and new players often complain about the difficulty. But if you ask me, it's not a hard game, it just works differently. If you play it like Skyrim it'll be hard. Morrowind forces you to read and to accept the rules of the world it's set in. Luckily, reading makes you understand the world. Now in terms of game feel, it's clunky as hell and below barebones.

Writing wise, Morrowind is easier to follow than Daggerfall was with a better journal and a more guided main quest. The genius of said MQ is it makes you explore the world and contact it's factions organically, as well as read into the lore. It's also a weird game, made by a bunch of guys in a basement, with quests that feel like an injoke and others that come off as offensive. It's a relic of a production that wasn't made to appeal to a large demographic, for better and for worst.

I believe Morrowind is a good game that's aged...more or less well, depending on the background of who's playing.

Oblivion

Brought: fully voiced dialog

Brought: active NPC AI

Brought: graphics improvements especially a physics engine

Lost: character skills

Lost: world design

Lost: weird shut-in appeal

Unique: main quest and game design experiments

Unique: Have You Heard Of The High Elves? Bwah! Urmf! Guhhh!

This one will be quick because...to be honest with y'all i have not played Oblivion. I have tried several times and i hate this game. Sorry TES 4 fans.

Oblivion is a weird one. At the time, it was a revolution. An open world game who was beautiful and let you dick around as you wanted. Oblivion was less weird and more forgiving than Morrowind, so had mass appeal. It had physics and voiced dialog. Everyone wanted to be Oblivion.

The problem with being a revolution for your time is computers progress at a neck breaking speed and relying only on what's impressive technology ages terribly. To prove this...have a good laugh at Oblivion's graphics. Unfortunately, the game opted to surf on LOTR visuals so has no originality, and just looks bad to this day.

Gameplay is...different. By being less strict than Morrowind and with a game feel that isn't "rolling around naked on an unpolished wooden floor", it's way more fun to run around in. Character customization lost some options, nothing too drastic unless you played Morrowind for the dressup or hardcore RP.

When you get into the writing, Oblivion has some very clever and memorable quests, unforgettable (for better and for worst) dialog and delivery, and a MQ where you play not the hero, but assistant to a hero of the lore, which I have not seen any other game attempt.

But nowadays, you don't see Oblivion known for its writing, most people know it as a big joke. Because the awkward graphics, the mess that is the dialog system and NPC AIs, make for an unmatched comedic improv experience. If you ask me, a game that's known for being goofy because of how shoddy some of its systems are...is not a good game. Unfortunately for Oblivion, gamefeel also improves as games progress and it's open world hill hopping appeal will get obliterated by the next installment.

Skyrim

Brought: more graphical improvements!

Brought: return to a nicher art direction

Brought: action game influence

Lost: RPG mechanics

Unique: Dovahkiin, dovahkiin, you know the song by now

Skyrim is funny to me as a game I remember everyone being amazed at when released. Nowadays the graphics look dated, but compared to Oblivion, it's nicher more cartoony art direction is iconic. Skyrim isn't a game that tries to be photorealistic like Oblivion did and that saves a lot of how it looks.

For the gameplay Skyrim ditched the RPG. Character customization, as in mechanics wise, is barely existing. Sure you can play different weapons but they all play similar. Builds have little influence. Choices are minimal to nonexistent. The main quest, unlike oblivion, has a cheesy chosen one story you can't escape. Asides of the daedric quests and if you do the DB, writing wise, it's pretty damn boring. The game doesn't even give you correct options to opt out of these. Skyrim assumes you play it the way it wants you to play it. If you fit that demographic, it's great! If you don't...its not fun.

The gamefeel in Skyrim is the best the series had. Taking from action games, combat was much improved and so was walking around the map, even if transportation skills were all axed. And the map is gorgeous. It's varied, it's big enough to explore without getting too lost, and it's just plain pretty.

And Skyrim has mass appeal. To the average person that doesn't care about justifying their elves action based on their complex lore rich backstory. Wandering around and slashing at things has never felt better! It's hard to meet a single person who hasn't played this game and most who did put HOURS into it.

However, the open world genre exploded several times since and took with it a lot of what made Skyrim special. Games now effortlessly make prettier maps and polished games that go all in on what exploration means. Skyrim does have its unique atmosphere, but the gameplay isn't unique enough to demark it from the rest. Someone who just wants to run around the map shooting at stuff will be better off with Far Cry who's entire gameplay is built around that. Skyrim isn't built around that. It's a large game that wants to be an RPG but doesn't give you choices. It's too rough around the edges to be a good action game. The content gets stale fast. Most people who still play it do so for the mods.

Every time I open Skyrim it's out of a deep longing for it's world and every time I close the game after 30 minutes of trying to find what to do. The atmosphere is there but the moment you take action, nothing. If you don't like killing draugr in dungeons or bandits in forts, there's just not much to do, as even city quests redirect you to those. It's a hiking simulator that doesnt do much to simulate hiking.

Currently Skyrim is the last game of the series and has been for over a decade and I believe that's why it still has any relevancy. It's success was a product of it's time like it's predecessor, it just hasn't had a successor yet. Skyrim is...not a very good game. Iconic yes, but not very good.

My conclusion

What makes these games interesting is often the features that get removed later, as basic features who remain get degraded by time as technology proves one can do them better. No TES game has aged well and the series is stagnating. That being said the earlier games sporting features not made for mass appeal but for the benefit of the game make them interesting in parts. These games nonetheless benefit from art (visuals, but also music!) that contributes to atmospheres one doesn't forget. TES has never been outstanding mechanically, but it can write a world.

If you want to experience the Morrowind high of an alien world created by basement dwellers who obliterates your first three lvl1 characters, play Kenshi. TES will never appeal to RPG nerds again.

Circled by the Wolves Pt 2

The Amber Glade continued to reel from the void elf attack on the Market Square. So many luxury items now had to be exported from other regions of the Eastern Kingdoms, or even from Kalimdor, on the other side of Azeroth. Shipments were often delayed for days, leaving the Bloodfeather sisters yet again with few options this early in the morning.

Syrahn felt her soul twist and writhe in her body with every sip of her bitter coffee. Her toast was without butter, without flavor, and therefore without purpose. At least her bacon was edible; that's what she first thought before the first bite, anyway. It was vegan bacon… made out of tofu. Her disappointment was immeasurable and her day was ruined.

“I suppose we should get on with this meeting without Ijiro.” Viridias pulled her messy mob of hair away from her face before straightening up in her seat. “Did you want to go first, Miriam?”

Miriam looked almost as miserable as Syrahn, but for vastly different reasons; the vineyards went up in flames thanks to those void elves, and all that was left to drink was Valasar's Grand, a dessert wine she wouldn't be caught dead drinking. For the first time in a long time, she was completely sober. “Public opinion of our house has been on a steady decline since the attack. You would think rebuilding their shops and the generous compensation we've given would solve this problem, but no. They're as stupid as they are greedy.”

“No amount of gold will bring their families and friends back.” Syrahn said, with a chill in her voice.

She either pretended not to notice or she didn't care, Syrahn couldn't read her while she was sober. “They want justice, not empty promises. Until we find who is behind this, their opinion of us is only poised to get worse.”

“I don't suppose anyone has any good news hidden somewhere?” Viridias sighed, before taking a bite of her butterless toast. Before Syrahn or Miriam could answer, a subtle whistling snagged the words in their throats. The song was annoyingly cheerful, and one Syrahn had heard many times before.

Right on cue Ijiro opened the door and stepped in, with his ridiculously large wolf Zaar trending behind him. “Goooooood moooorrrniiiinng!” His booming voice wasn't kind on their ears, but Syrahn was angry at him long before he strolled in here; she awoke this morning to find he slipped away from their bed in the dead of night, and her cruel imagination got the better of her senses. “Ahh, Viri is all natural today, yeah?” He plucked her hand off the table and gently kissed her knuckles. “The years have been very kind to you, my dear. As breathtaking today as a century ago.” Viridias didn't know what to say to that, but her ruby red face said enough. Miriam stiffened once Ijiro turned to look at her with a big, dumb, crooked smile on his face. “Grumpier than usual, yeah? How about a big hug from your brother!”

“Touch me and Syrahn will ever find your rema-guhhh!” She couldn't even finish her threat before his strong arms were around her, scooping her out of her seat and holding up tightly. Ijiro even gave her a light pack on the cheek, causing Miriam to shudder… not from rage nor discomfort, but from something much more concerning.

Syrahn watched her sisters like a starving lynx. She suspected they haven't felt the embrace of a man in quite some time, but for them to be this touch-starved? It raised a few questions Syrahn wasn't sure she wanted answered. She knew and trusted Ijiro wouldn't forsake his vows, or she wouldn't have married him; but would her sisters tempt him? She was so preoccupied with studying her sisters she didn't notice her husband until it was too late to stop him.

His coarse hands wrapped around her chin and pinch her cheeks together, forcing her lips to part. The long and gentle kiss tasted so good Syrahn nearly forgot why she was upset in the first place. “How's my queen and little Ijiro jr. doing?”

“His name is Alu.” Syrahn corrected in a hushed tone. “And not so loud! Zaetan is just down the hall!” Ijiro gave her a sly smirk before downing her cup of black coffee.

“If you're done trying to flatter us,” Miriam sneered, “Maybe you can add something useful to this meeting.”

The sky grin on his face only grew larger at his sister's sass. “I believe I can manage that.” Ijiro reached into his vest and tossed a plain envelope onto the table.

“A letter?” Viridias raised a brow.

“A lead.” The three sisters exchanged skeptical glances before Miriam reached over to give it a read. “This morning I paid House Hearthdust a visit. Apparently they are good at finding information and… items of particular value.”

“That's where he went?” Syrahn thought, gulping dryly; she tried to remember if Lord Parneus had any daughters, but no names came to mind. Zaar noticed how tense she was becoming, and slipped underneath the table to rest his head on her lap. The wolf's head felt like it belonged to a Silverpine Grizzly, but most of it was thick black and graying fur. Syrahn felt her toes begin to tingle from the weight of the wolf putting her legs to sleep, but one look in his deep yellow eyes and she couldn't resist scratching behind his ears.

“And you trust them…” Miriam spoke with a tone more befitting an accusation than a question.

“Of course not.” Ijiro's retort was quick and indignant. “No one else has stepped up with a lead, and the longer we wait, the sooner they try something again. We can't afford to dismiss this, yeah?”

It was Syrahn's turn to throw her opinion out there. “Awfully nice for them to hold this information from us… why didn't they bring this up sooner?”

“My threat to the great houses seemed to make them take this a lot more urgently.” Ijiro leaned against the table and watched Miriam’s eyes dart back and forth while she read the letter in silence. “So… do you think it's the real deal?”

“If this letter is to be believed...” Miriam paused to continue reading, but once she reached the end, her gaze returned to Lord Bloodfeather. “This House Duskthorn mentions Lord Atharil Dawnvale… a man King Anasterian publicly executed for treason. Maybe they are working with the surviving members of his family? Maybe they are House Dawnvale reborn...?”

“One of the great families is working with them... we find one of his lackeys, we put his feet to the fire, we learn who hired them.” Ijiro stood up straight and crossed his arms. “How’s that for a lead, eh?”

“The High Kingdom is a big place. Finding their hideout could take months. Maybe even years.” Miriam frowned. “How do we even start this search?”

“We'll work out the details later. Right now we need to make sure House Hearthdust is genuine… and this letter isn't a trap.” He briefly stroked his chin before turning his attention to Syrahn's lukewarm toast. Unsurprisingly he left her insult to food everywhere - the vegan bacon - exactly where and how he found it; a single bite taken out of one strip, no more, no less.

Right as he pushed the entire piece of burnt bread into his mouth, a heavy fist knocked on the door. “Forgive me for interrupting,” Zaetan called out, and for an instant Shrahn feared he was eavesdropping this entire time. “But this is urgent.”

“Come in.” Syrahn commanded.

Zaetan swung the door wide open with a host of guards behind him, all of whom were out of breath; Ijiro's largest wolf suddenly slipped away from Syrahn's lap and reappeared between Zaetan and the Bloodfeathers. “My Lord,” Zaetan started, doing his best to ignore the huge beast silently judging him. “it's the Oathguard. They've returned from Argus.”

2. I admit it’s usually treating myself to something I like to eat; not always ideal but there we are. I’m not really very good at it in general… I’d say watching YouTube, but I do that almost all the time.

3. CRUEL; this is on a level with the ‘what’s your favourite Beatles song’ question, but … probably Google Feud #3. It’s so funny and fond and flirty and the chaotic energy is off the charts. Obviously there are SO many contenders on the gaming channel … but also almost every video they were in together on their solo channels was golden, and I had a hard time not choosing a baking video or the UK vs Japan lunches one or Dan and Phil and Dogs or blindfolded cat face game… so many possibilities.

We already know this episode will be about Siggy circling the drain just a little more. No clue where this is coming from, especially because she was the Housewife to beat popularity-wise this season. I also hope Danielle will do something with her jet black hair. What’s more offensive, the solid black hair or Margaret’s pigtails? A question for the ages. Here we go!

Act I

Margaret is throwing a party for her ‘cosmetic byags.’

Ugh these Housewives and their house renos! Enough already!

Siggy’s husband is making meatballs. I like that he’s present this season. I think producers predicted Siggy would have no one else to talk to. If she cries into these meatballs so help me God. Revelation: Were the crabcakes too salty because Siggy cried into them?!

Dolores is folding clothes… that she ordered? And they arrived in a moving box? Also, the kitchen seems like a normal place for this.

Frank Sr. has the agility of Arnold Schwarznegger.

Meanwhile at Teresa’s, the Gorgas do manual labor. I don’t think Teresa’s dad should be helping lift that solid dresser.

I don’t believe that Siggy and Margaret ever really knew each other. Siggy is psychotically angry.

Joe bought a restaurant. I feel like Joe’s business ventures are very Tim Allen from Home Improvement… super hair-brained and comedic, yet his house is GIANT. What am I missing?

Something tells me this restaurant story is headed to, “I’m trying to fill a void because my mom is gone.” I shovel spicy cheetos into my mouth to deal with tragedy but to each his own.

Guhhh Teresa’s gross lawyer is back! I don’t trust this guy!!

Teresa just made a tree pose joke and everyone is like “HAHAHAHA! Just give us your money.”

I love that Margaret’s friend comes down the stairs from the 1950’s like, “Margaret!! The oven’s broken!!”

I do think Siggy should take that mask off now. She’s going to wash that thing off and it’ll just be her skull left.

Siggy: “I won’t put XO Siggy, that’s phony!” Yes Siggy, no one could ever accuse you of being phony.

Margaret just arrived to meet Siggy with a geisha parasol that accomplishes nothing.

The fact that Margaret let Siggy introduce her to the group and then turned her back on her immediately is, to be honest, amazing.

Margaret is really holding her own in this diner argument. She’s winning a lot of points!

Act VI

If you’re Margaret, and you know you’re going into a lunch with a crazy person, and you STILL order an omelet and are determined to sit there and finish it… you deserve a permanent spot on the cast.

My thoughts on the new Engeki Haikyuu, Winners and Losers!!! Details under the Read More to avoid spoiling anyone who would rather wait until the DVD release.

With a 3+ hour play, it’s hard to do a detailed summary that goes scene by scene because I know I’ll forget about something or mix up order of events, so I mostly want to go over the major themes and particular scenes and characters that stuck out to me. If you have questions for any other character or how a specific scene played out, please feel free to ask! One of the main bits of thematic imagery used this time around was wind as well as the obvious one of music, which we’ve seen in dress rehearsal footage. They went with something of a wind theme for Aoba Johsai, with projections that show gusts of wind flowing across the stage with leaves flying on it, sometimes the breeze animation will shift into twisting, curling vines. Hinata has a couple of dream sequences in the play where he’s buffeted by those winds, and he repeats: “There’s a wind blowing. Sometimes it’s with you, sometimes it’s against you.” Kenma is in the dreams as well (sometimes with a cat head), warning Hinata to not get caught up in that wind, but also implicitly reminding him that he needs that wind to fly.  No seriously, the dream sequences were meant to be surreal and weird. This results in a line that Hinata says to Kageyama that is unique to the stage play. “Kageyama, let’s ride the wind!” And to go along with that theme and those images, there are several moments throughout the play where Kenta is strapped into a bungee that hangs down from the ceiling (once, Kageyama is strapped into a bungee of his own) and them he will literally go flying around the stage, taking massive leaps as they run around. Sometimes he’s hooked into a lifting harness and it’ll pull him just straight up into the air where he’ll even just flip around on them like an aerial acrobat to show how high he can “fly.” I personally really enjoyed this added thematic element to this match. I always enjoy when a new version of an existing work interprets the source material in creative ways to work specifically with the new medium, and Engeki Haikyuu is always excellent about fully utilizing THEATER-SPECIFIC effects and humor. It does things with the story you’ll never see in the anime, things that don’t read right in illustrations, and I’ve always held a deep appreciation for the creative collaboration this show has been. When it comes to the music theme, it’s there for both teams, but much less so for Karasuno, since Aoba Johsai is meant to be the image of a smooth orchestra, and Karasuno is still a little haphazard as a team. Every single piece of Seijoh’s choreography and music reflects the orchestra theme. Their movements are always elegant and smooth, and now they feature a lot of ballet movements. Aoba Johsai is meant to be classical music, Karasuno is a rock band trying to figure itself out lol. And of course that ties into the setters because Oikawa is that model orchestra conductor. When Suga is on the court, it’s like he’s directing a jazz band. Fun and upbeat, mostly in sync, but not Seijoh’s elegance. For Kageyama, it’s difficult to get the hang of the conducting, he doesn’t quite know how to lead the team in a distinct choreography line Suga can, but that also highlights how hard the team is working around Kageyama to try to follow the pace he’s setting. So following that I want to talk about Kageyama because I must have cried for about three of his scenes at least. They feature a lot of flashbacks for him, including the middle school mid-match rejection we’ve seen before, as well as the scene from middle school where he asks Oikawa to teach him and nearly got punched instead. These flashback scenes are done a few times each, with the narration and POV switching between characters, and when it’s Kageyama’s POV, he is unbelievably hurt when Oikawa rejects him the way he did. He gets so caught up in that memory, remembering that he then decided he would simply have to become better than Oikawa, and this is when his conducting gets super erratic and his plays start getting sloppy. Sometimes the King of the Court will appear on stage (a secondary actor wearing the crown and the cloak) and Kageyama will see him and turn away in fear. Just before he’s benched and Suga takes the court, he grabs the King by the shoulders screaming at him, “NOT YOU! NO! GO AWAY!” They show him physically rejecting this haunting memory of the setter he used to be, and honestly, it’s super heartbreakinggggg. Heart-wrenching moments also go to Suga of course, but I always found them most GUHHH when his own insecurities are directly tied to still being a good senpai to Kageyama. And I feel like the stage play acknowledges this much more than the manga and the anime, because they give Suga and Kageyama so many moments together. The stage play better shows Kageyama’s admiration of Suga and also his appreciation of him, as the setter senpai who doesn’t reject him the way Oikawa did. Over and over the two of them share this one line of dialogue where Suga gently reminds Kageyama that their team is strong and he’s not alone. He can depend on them. Suga: What do we say about our team? Kageyama: Everyone is very strong. Whenever Suga is on the court they give a LOT of attention to third years and how overjoyed the three of them are to play together. Daichi and Asahi are extra animated and take center stage with Suga as they play, and it’s sooooo sweeeet!!! They do also include flashbacks to the third years when they first joined Karasuno, and this is done by the three seconds years wearing face masks of the older three. Kazuma/Ennoshita plays younger Suga, Kouhei/Tanaka plays younger Asahi, and Shouhei/Noya plays younger Daichi. Hilariously, Shouhei has like a cushion or something stuffed up his shirt to give him Daichi’s broad chest and then he also just sticks that chest out constantly and I could not stop laughing. THE TOBIUO. A scene where I laughed WAY longer than I should have was when Tsukishima and Tanaka make the flying fish joke with Kageyama’s name. What you don’t see is everyone else covering Kageyama from view as he puts on AN ACTUAL RIDICULOUS BLUE FISH OUTFIT and then he awkwardly hops forward screaming that he’s not a fish. And just when I thought to myself, wow, I can’t believe they made him a fish outfit for this 2 second joke, HE THEN KEPT IT ON FOR THE ENTIRE NEXT BIT OF CONDUCTING CHOREOGRAPHY, FLAPPING HIS FINS TO LEAD THE TEAM IN A ROUTINE FOR A SOLID 3 MINUTES??? BEFORE HE WADDLED OFF-STAGE TO CHANGE. I cried at that. Another sequence of scenes that I found super emotional was everything leading up to Yamaguchi’s failed serve. They show him asking Shimada, training with him, etc… but they also tied in Tsukishima more closely. They show Yamaguchi telling Tsukki he has something else to do and running off, and Tsukishima acting very rejected. During the Seijoh match, during a timeout, he and Tsukki share this dialogue. Yamaguchi: It looks rough out there. Tsukishima: Well obviously. Standing on the court for a while is tiring. Yamaguchi: But… I’m still envious. Of everyone. I want to stand on the court too! And as Yamaguchi stands there, his back to Tsukki as he admires the team, Tsukishima reaches out and says Yamaguchi’s name to tell him something BUT THEN THE WHISTLE BLOWS and they have to resume play. I have never been more frustrated omg because that extra “Yamaguchi!” is not in the manga or anime and my heart was just screaming WHAT WERE YOU GOING TO SAY?!?!?? As for adorable cute, time to talk about Kuroo and Kenma. Because oh my god. I know a lot of you know by now that Takato and Shouri cross dress to play Oikawa fangirls during the match, but they have about FIVE MILLION costume changes???? They’re CONSTANTLY running off the stage to change into Kuroo and Kenma and coming out on stage for flashbacks or Hinata dream sequences or to serve as visual reminders for Kageyama and Hinata as they remember playing with them. They’re constantly implying that the setters always have that one spiker that they trust and always toss to. For Kenma, that’s Kuroo. For Kageyama, it’s Hinata. For Oikawa, it’s Iwaizumi. For Suga, it’s Asahi. Kuroo frequently circles Hinata as Kenma circles Kageyama to play up that parallel. And then they run off stage to put the skirts and the extra hair pieces back on… I mean, I lost count of the costume changes after ten. As girls, they did a personality switch so Takato is the friendly, outgoing girl who is always pulling Shouri along and engages in conversation with Shimada about the game and the plays they make. Shouri is the shy one who trails behind or is scared of talking to Shimada and the one who gets super flustered and squealy. These two are the source of the humor most of the time because the players have a lot of drama going on obviously. When they first get on stage as girls, Takato asks, “Did you get taller again?” Shouri, super chipper, and with his voice pitched up, goes, “Now I’m 187cm tall!” They also show up at the end of the first intermission to open the second Act as Kuroo and Kenma. Kuroo STRUTS onto the stage and dramatically gestures for everyone to clap, and then he SNAPS to make everyone stop and just goes, “That’s goood~” Then he tries to do the Nekoma chant but gets to the brain line and goes, “Wait! The brain isn’t here! Kenma!!!” Then Kenma walks onto the stage playing a game and Kuroo tells him to switch it off, so Kenma turns to the audience. “Since I have to turn off my game, if everyone else in the audience could also please turn off your cell phones and refrain from—“ Kuroo: “Who are you talking to?” And Kenma keeps giving general viewing instructions and Kuroo keeps being weirded out because obviously “There’s nobody there.” But then Kenma keeps trying to break the fourth wall and keeps asking Kuroo taboo questions. Kenma: Say, Kuroo… why are we the only Nekoma members— Kuroo: That’s taboo!!! Kenma: What about those girls— Kuroo: ALSO TABOO; DON’T SAY IT!!!! Obviously these are supposed to be the girls that originally came to cheer on Oikawa but as they continued to watch the match, they started rooting for Karasuno too. Towards the end of the third set, Takato shouts, “Aoba Johsai, Karasuno… Both of you do your best!!!” And then Shouri starts PULLING UP HIS SKIRT to show his Nekoma uniform underneath and shrieks, “NEKOMA, DO YOUR BEST TOO!” and Takato has to pull his skirt back down while screaming that that was especially taboo!!! Shouri spends the rest of their scene there with his pink skirt pulled up awkwardly around his chest because of the way he pulled on it, and it was SUPER DISTRACTING. And um… uhhh…. I’m leaving out so much, there was so much going on, but this is so long and… I woke up at 4am because of jetlag and instead of going back to sleep I started writing this so... I’ll make other posts as I remember more and feel free to ask!!!
